Membership Has Its Privileges

There is great delight in owning a boat. Nothing can be more enjoyable than spending relaxing summer days cruising a lake with family and friends and enjoying picturesque landscapes from the deck while sipping your favourite beverage. Watching beautiful sunsets from the deck of a boat is one of the things I enjoy most while sailing. Those of us who dream of owning a boat someday, keep that aspiration alive by perusing images in popular media of carefree sailors visiting exotic far-flung regions...

Sailor Bruce Kirby awarded the Order of Canada

On Thursday last week, at age 88, Bruce Kirby has been invested into the Order of Canada for his contributions to the sport. Besides representing Canada three times at the Olympics, Kirby's biggest contribution to the sport of sailing is the design of the popular Laser dinghy.

Kirby designed the boat in 1969 after his friend and boatmaker Ian Bruce asked him to design a sailboat small enough to be carried on top of a car. Kirby has designed over other 50 boats, but none have come close to the popularity of the Laser.

Grassroots’ last European excursion took us to the beautiful Ionian coast of Greece. We experienced fascinating local customs, superb food, friendly people and of course the adventure of sailing in an exotic sailing environment. Sailing the azure blue waters of Greece island hopping the numerous islands of the Ionian sea was a dream come true for many of our crew and club members.

These cruises are a great way enjoy time with old friends and meet new ones. Often friendships made on these cruises last a lifetime.

Many of us go a few days before or stay a few days after to see the history and archeology of some of the oldest European civilizations.

Grassroots Sailing Club members generally get a discount which is an extra bonus.

Check out the video to get a small insight into the experiences we enjoyed.

"Would recommend Grassroots Sailing to anybody who wants to take up sailing. Very professional and knowledgeable staff. A great school and fantastic club."

"Grassroots Sailing Centre (GRSC)is the ideal sailing organisation for anyone thinking about sailing. The Centre’s School and membership are committed to learning and the sharing of sailing knowledge, and there are plenty opportunities to be on the water for the committed learner. All this at an affordable price at a facility about 45 minutes from most GTA locations. My involvement with this organization over the past two and a half years has been enjoyable but incredibly fulfilling."

"Choosing Grassroots for sailing lessons and then joining the club was the best decision! As a female new to sailing, the instructors and mentors were very patient and supportive. Always plenty of opportunity to sail with mentors and gain experience. Very nice location on Cook's Bay."

"Grassroots is an amazing place to learn how to sail. Not only do you get top notch instruction, the club makes sailing easy and accessible in a friendly environment without having to buy a boat. I've learned so much from my fellow club members - and have grown from a novice to a racer!"
